What are the salary and benefits?

Salary and Benefits may be found at the Hawaii Residency Program website.


How often are residents on call?

Pathology residents normally satisfy their call duty at-home.  During AP rotation, residents are on call every other day.  On other rotations, residents are on call six days at a time each month.


How often are days off?

Sundays are off in all rotations, most rotations have half-days on Saturday.  Holidays governed by schedule of assigned institution.


What electives are offered outside of the program?

Residents may be allowed to spend time on an "away" rotation, not to exceed two months, with prior Program approval.


What is the cost of living in Hawaii (on Oahu) like?

The cost of living on Oahu is comparable to other major cities such as Boston, Los Angeles, and New York.  More information can be found on our Living in Hawaii page.


What is the "educational fund" for residents?

One Program paid conference leave/trip per resident per 4-year training.  Scholarly activity expenses supported by the Program on a pre-approved basis.  Annual book allowance $250.


Are residents allowed to moonlight?

Residents are allowed to moonlight with proper approvals.  Duty hour policy must be adhered.


What type of fellowships do residents obtain?

Residents in the past have obtained competitive fellowships in many different areas of pathology.  More information can be found on our Residents page under Fellowships.
