Collectively, institutions access over 70,000 surgical specimens, over 150,000 cytology specimens, over eight million clinical laboratory determinations and over 700 autopsies each year. This, combined with individual faculty member consultation case material, gives our residents the widest possible exposure to pathology material.
During the four-year Residency, residents rotate through several institutions including Kaiser Permanente, The Queen's Medical Center and Hawaii Medical Center. Specialty training is conducted at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, the Medical Examiner's Office, Queen's Medical Center Genetics Laboratories and Tripler Medical Center.
Our graduates have done very well in passing the examinations in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology given by the American Board of Pathology, with nearly all passing on the first attempt. All of our recent graduates found jobs by the time they graduated.
Residents have the opportunity to work with other established UH Pathology Residency Program graduates, to name a few just on Oahu: Dr. David Shimizu, Program Director (Interim) and Director of Laboratories, The Queen's Medical Center; Dr. Glenn Furuya, Medical Director, Hawaii Medical Center West; Dr. Steven Komura, Director of Laboratories, Hawaii Medical Center East; Dr. Kanthi De Alwis, Chief Medical Examiner, City & County of Honolulu; Dr. Gayle Suzuki, Assistant Deputy Medical Examiner, City & County of Honolulu; Dr. JME, Associate Pathologist, Kaiser Foundation Medical Center; Dr. Kirk Hirata, Associate Pathologist, The Queen's Medical Center; Dr. David Horio, Staff Pathologist, Hawaii Medical Center; Dr. Wesley Kim, The Queen's Medical Center; Dr. Stanley Loo, Associate Pathologist, Kaiser Foundation Medical Center; Dr. Pamela Tauchi-Nishi, Associate Pathologist, The Queen's Medical Center; and Dr. Keith Tonaki, Director of Laboratories, The Queen's Medical Center. |
