General Information

The University of Hawaii Pathology Residency Program offers a fully accredited, four-year combined anatomic and clinical pathology training program.  The educational format centers on the evaluation of laboratory material from individual patients with emphasis given to clinicopathologic correlation.  The case study approach is augmented by providing a comprehensive, well-balanced curriculum using local and nationally recognized consultants, pathology study sets and reading assignments in relevant texts and journals.

The pathology resident is expected to constantly expand his/her knowledge through extensive reading, frequent case presentations, laboratory bench work and comparison studies of current cases with previous cases on file.  Each resident is given graduated patient care responsibilities according to his/her progress and capabilities, but at every level, adequate supervision by competent faculty is provided.  The resident is expected to develop expertise in making decisions and judgments about individual cases.  A critical factor in this process includes learning to be an effective problem solver and consultant.

Residents at the University of Hawaii Pathology Residency Program are exposed to a broad spectrum of clinical cases not available in other regions of the nation due to the diverse multiethnic society in Hawaii.  The training experience is also enhanced by the involvement of multiple types of institutions, three major hospitals, private practice, military exposure and HMO.  Several of these participating institutions have developed computer-assisted systems providing residents with an excellent opportunity to train in a contemporary format.

The Program encourages residents to pursue at least one relevant scholarly project during their training.  With the help of pathology staff mentor(s), completed projects are presented to our training program, the Hawaii Society of Pathologists and, where appropriate, to a national meeting.  Ultimately, we expect worthy projects to be published in a scientific journal.

Based on the above, a resident who completes this Program has received a balanced, broad general experience and education that prepares them for Board eligibility.
